How to Write a Love Letter

By Relationships editorial team · Updated

20 Guided Love Letter Templates: twenty prompts to help you say what you mean

To write a love letter, pick one person-specific thing you want to say, begin with a concrete memory or detail, say how it makes you feel and end with a wish or a promise. You don't need fancy language. The best love letters sound like the writer, include things only the two of you would know and take less than 20 minutes to write.

What you'll need

Step 1: Decide why you're writing

A reason gives the letter focus. It might be an anniversary, a birthday, a hard week, a trip apart, a thank-you or just because. Write the reason in one line, such as "I want you to know how much I appreciate you being there this month."

Step 2: Pick one thing to focus on

Instead of trying to say everything, choose one theme: a memory, a quality, a gratitude, a hope. A focused letter lands better than a long list.

Step 3: Start with a concrete detail

Open with a moment you can picture, not an abstract line. Compare:

Step 4: Say what it means to you

Move from the detail to the feeling. "That day I realized you notice the small things, and it made me feel safe." Describing the effect on you is more personal than praising them in general terms.

Step 5: Add what you appreciate

Name two or three specific things you value. Examples: how they handle a stressful day, how they make the house feel warm, how they support your goals. Keep to what's true.

Step 6: Look ahead

End with a hope, a plan or a promise: "I'm looking forward to more mornings like this." A small, sincere promise is stronger than a big claim.

Step 7: Edit and deliver

Read it aloud, cut anything that doesn't sound like you and fix any unclear lines. Then deliver it in a way that suits the moment: on the pillow, in a lunchbox, in a bag, by mail or in a card.

Love letters for specific people

To a husband or wife

Long marriages benefit from specific notice. Mention a daily thing you value, such as how they handle mornings, a way they care for the family or a memory from early on. A line like "I'm glad I get to do ordinary life with you" can mean a lot.

To a boyfriend or girlfriend

Keep it warm and genuine. Include a memory from your time together and what you're looking forward to. Avoid pressure or big promises that don't match where the relationship is.

Across the miles

If you're apart, add sensory details and small plans: "When we meet again, the first thing I want to do is..." See long distance relationship activities for more ways to stay close.

Example (short)

Dear Sam, Last night when you stayed up to help me finish that report, I thought about how you do that without being asked. It made me feel like I'm not carrying everything alone. Thank you. I love how steady you are, and how you can make me laugh in the middle of a bad day. I'm looking forward to the weekend with you. Yours, Alex

Mistakes to avoid

Make it a habit

A letter once or twice a year is wonderful, and a note now and then is even better. Try a short note on a Sunday or a letter on an anniversary. Pair letters with a question night so you have fresh material.

Frequently asked questions

What should I write in a love letter?

Write what you notice, appreciate and imagine. Specific memories and details matter more than big phrases. Say what you love about the person and what they mean to you.

How long should a love letter be?

Anywhere from a paragraph to a page is fine. A short, sincere note beats a long one that feels forced.

Should a love letter be handwritten?

Handwriting adds a personal touch, but a typed letter or an email is fine. Many people draft on a screen and copy by hand.

What if I'm not good at writing?

Use starter lines, write as you would speak and focus on one memory or one quality. Sincerity matters more than polish.
