Couples Games to Play at Home

The best couples games are quick to learn, work with two players and leave room to talk. You don't need a complicated setup: a deck of cards, paper and pens and a little friendly competition will go a long way. Here are 15 ideas in three groups, plus tips for planning a game night that doesn't end in an argument.
Quick card and board games
- Gin rummy. A classic two-player card game that rewards patience and a little luck.
- Cribbage. Good for long conversations while you count points on the board.
- Spit or Speed. Fast-paced and funny, ideal when you want to laugh.
- Two-player board games. Many modern games have a strong two-player mode. Choose one you can finish in 30 minutes.
- Dominoes or Mexican Train. Easy to learn and relaxed.
Word and brain games
- Trivia about each other. Each writes ten questions about their own life, then guesses the other's answers. Score a point per correct answer.
- Would you rather. Take turns asking silly, romantic or practical choices, and explain the reason.
- 20 questions. One person picks a person, place or thing, and the other asks yes-or-no questions.
- Story chain. One person starts a story with a sentence and you take turns adding to it until it ends in a surprise.
- Finish the sentence. Start with "The best part of our week was..." or "One thing I've always wanted to tell you is..." and both complete it.
Active and creative games
- Charades. Write titles on slips of paper, and act them out in a timed round.
- Drawing contest. One draws a word, the other guesses, with silly prizes.
- Couple bingo. Create bingo cards with items like "something we did together in the first year" and cross them off as you remember them.
- Indoor scavenger hunt. One hides notes or small treats around the house, and the other follows the clues.
- Build-off. Give each other 15 minutes and the same materials, such as LEGO or paper, then compare creations.
How to plan a game night for two
- Pick a night and a time. Start early enough to enjoy it.
- Choose two or three games. Include one quick, one thoughtful and one silly.
- Set the stakes. A back rub, the choice of dessert, the right to pick the next date.
- Prepare snacks. Easy finger food and drinks keep it relaxed.
- Keep score lightly. Use a scoreboard and a tie-breaker, like rock-paper-scissors.
- End with something warm. Finish with a hug, a compliment or a memory of the best moment.
| Game type | Best for | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Card games | Relaxed evenings, easy talk | 20–40 minutes |
| Conversation games | Getting to know each other better | 15–30 minutes |
| Active games | Burning energy, laughing | 15–30 minutes |
| Creative games | Working together, keepsakes | 30–60 minutes |
Keep it friendly
- Agree on the spirit. You're playing to enjoy each other, not to prove who's smarter.
- Take turns choosing. One picks the first game and the other picks the second.
- Be a good winner and a good loser. A quick "good game" helps.
- Use tie-breakers. A quick coin toss avoids an argument.
- Stop while it's fun. If one of you is getting tired or irritated, call it.
Games that double as conversations
Some games are best when they bring you closer. Try pairing a game with a question:

- Before each round of cards, one person asks the other a question.
- During trivia, add a "wildcard" round with questions you've never asked each other.
- After the game, each says one thing they enjoyed about the other's play.
